In coastal Mazarrón, hard tap and well water (with high concentrations of calcium carbonate and magnesium) combined with sloping plots in developments like Camposol and Bolnuevo frequently cause conventional drip irrigation setups to fail due to emitter clogging and uneven water delivery between upper and lower terraces.
The engineering solution is a pressure-compensating (PC) and anti-drain (CNL) micro-irrigation system.

The flexible silicone diaphragm inside pressure-compensating drippers adjusts its aperture dynamically according to incoming water pressure, delivering the exact same output (e.g., 2.2 L/h or 3.8 L/h) to the first plant and the final plant 60 metres down the line.
2. Irrigation Zoning by Plant Species
Connecting plants with vastly different water requirements to a single pipeline is a common pitfall. We design systems with at least 3 independent 24V solenoid valve zones:
- Zone 1 (Shrubs & Fruit Trees): 16 mm PE40 polyethylene line with integrated 3.8 L/h pressure-compensating drippers spaced every 33 cm.
- Zone 2 (Rockeries & Succulents): Solid 16 mm blank pipe with manually inserted 2.2 L/h micro-drippers positioned directly at the base of agaves, aloes, and senecios.
- Zone 3 (Porch Planters & Pots): 4.5 mm flexible micro-tubing fitted with adjustable stake bubblers.
3. Limescale Prevention & Filter Maintenance
To protect against mineral buildup:
- 120-mesh (130-micron) Disc Filter: Captures sand and mineral particles before they reach solenoid valves.
- Biannual Flush-Out: Open line end caps for 60 seconds while the pump runs to clear accumulated sediment.
- Early Morning Scheduling: Watering at dawn keeps pipe water cool, preventing the accelerated precipitation of calcium carbonate inside emitter diaphragms.
