The native soil across the Mazarrón basin presents two major horticultural challenges: heavy, compacted clay that turns rock-hard in summer and waterlogged in winter, and an alkaline pH (regularly exceeding 8.0) due to active limestone.
Without proper ground preparation, new garden plantings often suffer from iron chlorosis (yellow leaves with green veins) and root suffocation.
1. Detecting & Breaking the Caliche Hardpan
Across many residential plots in Camposol and surrounding developments, a dense, cemented layer of calcium carbonate known locally as caliche lies 30 to 60 cm below the surface:
- This hardpan acts like a swimming pool base, trapping drainage water and causing root rot.
- Work Protocol: Before planting trees or laying gravel parterres, we use augers or heavy mechanical breakers to fracture the caliche layer and create vertical drainage chimneys into lower permeable strata.
2. Soil Amendment Formula for Garden Parterres
To convert dense clay into an open, fertile, free-draining soil blend:
